Czech parties divided over Sobotka's resignation as party leader

This was a cowardly and desperate act, Andrej Babis, leader of ANO, a member of the coalition cabinet, said in reaction to Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka resigning as Social Democrat leader, while Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) leader Pavel Belobradek said Sobotka had taken a strong step he appreciated.

Sobotka to quit as Social Democrats chief

PM Bohuslav Sobotka has announced that he is to step down as chairman of the Social Democratic Party on Thursday. He is to remain as head of government until after general elections in October. Mr. Sobotka made the announcement after a meeting of senior ČSSD leaders on Wednesday evening. Deputy chairman Milan Chovanec, who is minister of the interior, will take over from Mr. Sobotka as party chief.

Zimola: ČSSD may not profit from change of leader anymore

The replacement of Czech PM Bohuslav Sobotka in the post of Social Democrat (CSSD) leader may not help the party anymore, CSSD South Bohemia regional branch head Jiri Zimola told CTK on Tuesday, four months before the general election.

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka's post as leader of the Social Democratic Party is looking increasingly shaky, with speculation increasing he could be replaced before the autumn election. Mr Sobotka refused to comment so far, saying only that the party leadership would address current developments on Wednesday.

Extreme rightist party to sue Interior Ministry
